Land
& Sea’s AC or Eddy Current Absorber (brake) and Electronic Control kits offer an
affordable way to build your own state-of-the-art, industrial-duty
engine or
chassis dynamometer. They are also ideal for restoring obsolete (or upgrading
inertia-only) dynamometers.

eddy current units in-house – so give us a call!”

DYNOmite Eddy Current Absorbers
offer very quick load control, moderate inertia, and high
specific load capacity, especially in the lower RPM working ranges of most
industrial-type engines. For applications that do not require stall speed
loading, an air-cooled eddy current absorber is usually the most cost-effective
electric absorber you can buy. Their self-cooled rotors require no external
water supply or resistor banks. They also cost less than planetary-driven water
brakes and allow far more design flexibility than hydraulic pumps. For
those applications that demand higher RPM limits, lower system inertia, and/or
temperature independence, we offer (slightly more expensive) water-cooled eddy
current absorbers.
 AC
(Alternating Current) Absorbers
deliver the ultimate in electronic load control. Besides lightning-fast
response, they are capable of providing full torque loading all the way down to
zero RPM (which is especially important for testing of electric motors).
Moderate power applications are configured to dissipate their energy into larger
external resistive load banks, while for very low power testing, heat
dissipation can sometimes be handled by the drive’s internal braking resistors.
For high-power applications, in the 200 Hp to 1,250+ Hp range, a regeneration
system that sends the power back into the utility’s grid (often for a credit on
the user’s electric bill) will be custom engineered. Most of our AC dyno
applications can optionally be configured to “motor” your test engine. In
addition to its providing a convenient way to start up the engine, motoring
allows testing its internal frictional cranking loads.
Battery
powered (12-volt DC) eddy current absorbers
are available for in-field service/testing applications. Everything, including the
absorber, load control, and DYNOmite data-acquisition
computer, can be run off
of a large truck battery. Combine this with your laptop computer, running
DYNO-MAX 2000™ software, to run a laboratory-like dynamometer test session…
almost anywhere on the planet.
 120-volt and 240-volt (input)
power supply/controls
are available to provide 96 or 192-volt DC PWM (pulse width modulated) output –
which is suitable for many DYNOmite or third party absorber models. Loading when
using these controls is adjustable – either manually (using either its panel
knob or the built-in 0-10 volt analog control input) or automatically via
digital PID output leads from the DYNOmite data-acquisition
computer. Panel
circuit breakers are matched to the customer’s application, protecting the
absorber’s windings.
Perfect
for torque reaction cradles where the higher
inertia of an electronic absorber (compared to that of a water brake) is not an issue.
Our “Micro” and “Mini” DYNOmite Eddy Current Absorbers are equipped with an
eccentric cam mounting body that helps to easily adapt them
to changes in drive
gear, pulley, or sprocket center distances.
Shaft,
Flange, or NEMA Frame mounting choices are
offered in various models. The keyed shaft units are most commonly supported
between a pair of pillow block bearings. This allows reading the reaction torque
via a load cell that is linked to the absorber’s trunnioned frame.
Alternatively, optional flat-flange models couple with matching bolt-pattern
driveshaft U-joint assemblies. Larger absorbers have a set of mounting holes in
their housings for fixing them to the dynamometer’s stand or to a reaction
cradle/table. The AC absorbers
are available in standard NEMA frame and in input shaft configurations.
Custom
hybrid configurations can
can also be designed using a combination of both an electronic, typically AC,
absorber (for fast torque control) and a large water brake (for inexpensively
adding very-high test power capacity). Control of the pair is handled via
DYNO-MAX 2000 “Pro.” While their complexity is
typically only justified for some sophisticated high-output applications,
hybrids make it possible to cost effectively build lower inertia and faster
response dynamometers, (with motoring capabilities) than can be had using any
single braking technology alone.
 High
speed spindle bearings and their grease seals
provide extra long life for extended industrial or OEM endurance testing
applications. Our larger eddy current absorbers feature Zerk grease fittings for
easier maintenance, while AC models boast sophisticated self- protection
systems. Most replacement bearings and their seals are available locally, and
they are engineered for convenient field replacement. These features are
combined into a design which minimizes the number of moving wear parts,
rendering expensive downtime a non-issue.
Need parts for an old eddy-current dyno? As a manufacturer
of eddy-current dyno absorbers, we can often repair otherwise obsolete units.
L&S does everything, from modernizing power supplies and controls to custom
winding replacement coils for “Brand-X” dynamometers.
